Home Business Tips – Conducting Research

I don’t care how long you’ve been running a home business. Every once in a while, you have to do some research. For example, when the FTC guidelines came out, effective December 1, 2009, I had to do some research to find out what they were, how they affected me and what I had to do to be compliant. This after almost seven years of running a home business. Okay, don’t ever think the day will come when you WON’T have to do research. However, you need to be careful about where you go to do this research and how you go about doing it.
Sad as it is, a lot of people out there, especially when they hear about something that is very important, will put up sites with this information for the soul purpose of infecting your computer with a virus. It has happened to me many times. Fortunately, because of my virus protection software, I am protected. But many people are not. Maybe you’re one of them. And even if you are, no virus protection is 100% fool proof. So you really need to be careful about where you go to do research.
Therefore, the best way to handle this is to ONLY go to authority sites. Okay, what do I mean by authority sites? Well, let’s take an example. Let’s say that for your business, you have to research the list of Grammy Award nominees for 2010. Now, if you were to look this up online, you would find quite a few sites with lists printed. However, many of these sites are of the kind I talked about above. They simply want to infect your computer with some terrible virus. So, what you want to do is look up the official Grammy Awards site. You can’t miss it when you see it. This site WILL be safe to go there and you WILL be able to get all the info you need from it.
You would do the same thing with any other type of information. If you need medical info, go to an authority site like WebMD. If you need info about the IRS, go to the official government site. Don’t fool around with these Mickey Mouse sites that you don’t know from Adam. For one thing, you don’t know if the info is accurate and for another, you don’t know what kind of virus you might pick up from them.
It’s a sad world we live in, unfortunately. However, it is also the reality that we live in. I can count the number of sites I go to and trust on one hand.
I suggest you do the same when it comes to research for your business.
